Artist: William Hogarth ( 1697 – 1764)

Title:  Strolling Actresses Dressing in a Barn

Medium: Engraving

Date of Work: Originally published in 1738.

Edition: These  engravings from "The Works of William Hogarth", published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates.

Dimensions : The plate  size is ca. 18 x 22.5 inches  Sheet size: approx. 25 1/4 inches x 19.5 inches

Signed: No

Condition: These prints are on sheets from a large album printed nearly 200 years ago . The prints are generally in good condition ( see images – larger file scans can be forwarded ) There may be scattered small stains and/or age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.

The yellowish tone of the main image is closer ( but maybe a bit exaggerated) to the tone of the paper. 2 small tears on right hand edge of sheet, outside platemark. Slight staining from edge of previous mount.

 Further description

In 1737 "the Act against Strolling Players" (a copy is on the crown) made it illegal for plays to be performed outside of London and Westminster without a license. This troupe is giving its last performance before the act takes effect.
